La Palma is one of the smaller
Canary Islands. There's no
mass-tourism here. Enjoy the peace and
quiet of this friendly, green island.
At the northwest of the Canaries
archipelago, a few hundred miles from
the coast of north-west Africa, lies the
island of La Palma, also known as La
Isla Bonita, because of its
extraordinary natural beauty.
What La Palma may lack in wide open
beaches is certainly made up for in
lavish greenery and majestic mountain
scenery. Thanks to the many freshwater
springs, the Island is the greenest of
the Canary Islands – the east
being dominated by palm trees and banana
plantations while the west has a
distinct Mediterranean feel.
An island of contrasts: mountains
and beaches, volcanoes and forests.
Summer and winter ideal for sun,
walking and hiking holidays or
just to really get away from it all.
There are hotels on the coast and many
self-catering cottages away from
it all.
La Palma also boasts many
pretty and unpretentious villages, and
the island capital, Santa Cruz, is one
of the most beautiful colonial towns in
the Spanish-speaking world.
Visit the valley of Los Tilos, where a
primeval forest of laurels, lime trees
and ferns exist as they have done for
thousands of years, or the traditional
fishing-village of Puerto de Naos
with splendid beaches.
Playa de Las Canteras – This 3 km
long beach has its own natural reef, ‘La
Barra’, which makes Playa de Las
Canteras a warm lagoon for swimmers and
water sports lovers, as well as those
who just wish to paddle in the water
close to shore. The beach is busy with
restaurants, shops, snack bars, and
cafes, and street entertainers, drawing
people to it in their droves.
Playa de las Alcaravaneras – A
thousand metres of golden sand makes
this the second longest beach in Las
Palmas. It is a favourite of the locals,
and is home to the Varadero Sailing Club
and the up-market Real Club Nautico
(Royal Sailing Club), and magnificent
ocean-going yachts are always seen
sailing by in all their snobbery and
elegance.
Behind Santa Cruz, like a colossal
amphitheatre, is the mighty Caldereta
volcanic crater, the largest in the
world.
Abundant vegetation, a great variety of
animals and fantastic landscapes make "MAROPARQUE"
an incredible spot of beauty where you
will be able to enjoy pleasant walks
immersed in the nature of relaxing and
peaceful surroundings. Visit also other
interesting theme parks, including El
Jardin de las Aves and Los Tiles.
If you like museums, La Palma
won't disappoint you with El Regente,
Belmaco, La Zarza, Naval and La Casa
Roja to name just a few museums.
You can decide whether you opt for
biking downwards or for biking upwards.
If you love mountain biking, you are
lucky: in La Palma you can bike
from the most abrupt forest and parts of
the Canary islands to the place where
the most recently erupted volcanoes can
be found.
The coast of Fuencaliente is the
best place to scuba-dive in La Palma.
Black coral, archs and canyons can be
found both on the north and the south
coast of the island. Besides, your
frequent encounters with lots of fish
will make your diving more enjoyable.
La Palma is a paradise for
hikers, because its paths, surrounded by
an exuberant flora and under a blue
clean sky, lead you through an
astonishing island.
You can practice both speluking and
volcano-speluking in this island. Villa
de Mazo houses the most important group
of caves where both activities can be
carried out, since it has a lot of
volcanic tubes.
The Madera ravine, just next to Santa
Cruz de La Palma and the Agujas del
Volcán Tajuya in El Paso are the two
best prepared places for the practice of
climbing and gorge bashing as well as
the most beautiful ones.
